Review methodology
A 0-10 scale based on editorial judgment. Not sub-score averages, not metacritic alignment. Here is what each band means.
Score bands
A rare score. Reserved for games that do something genuinely new or execute at a level we haven't seen before. Not every game needs a 10 to be worth your time.
Standout craft, value, or innovation. Clear recommendation for anyone interested in the genre or game type. Minor issues don't hold it back in any meaningful way.
Solid. Worth playing if you like the genre, with real caveats called out in the review text. A 7 isn't a back-handed compliment — it means the game does its job well.
Has something to offer but is held back by real problems. Read the full review before buying. Not a recommendation, but not a dismissal either — it depends on what you value.
Significant issues with design, technical state, or value that we can't overlook. The review will explain exactly what went wrong. We avoid going this low unless the problems are fundamental.
What scores are not
Scores are not a mathematical average of sub-categories. We don't score graphics, sound, gameplay, and story separately and add them up. The number reflects an overall editorial judgment informed by technical performance, design, narrative where relevant, and how well the release serves players at launch.
Early Access games are reviewed on what's in the current build. If the game updates significantly, we may update the review — the review card shows the version we played. A score for a 0.8 build isn't a prediction of the 1.0 score.
We don't review games we can't play for a reasonable amount of time. We don't adjust scores based on review embargos or publisher relationships. We do accept review keys from developers — see our contact page if you want to send a key.
Editorial independence
Review scores are assigned by our editors and are never influenced by publishers, developers, or affiliate relationships. We do not publish sponsored reviews. Accepting a review key does not guarantee coverage or affect the score. If we receive a key, we disclose it in the review.
