Pokemon TCG Pocket Dual Type Cards: How Dual Fusion Works

Dual type doesn't mean dual Energy. Mega Mewtwo X ex and Mega Greninja ex pay with one type.

Our callRegister only the Energy your attacker's cost prints. The second type gives you Weakness hits and type support for free, and registering it too cuts your on-curve attack to half or less.

Pokemon TCG Pocket dual type cards arrived with Dual Fusion, which The Pokémon Company launched on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. PDT. The first two are the Psychic and Fighting Mega Mewtwo X ex and the Water and Darkness Mega Greninja ex. It's tempting to read "two types" as "two kinds of Energy", and that's the mistake to avoid. Below is what the second type gets you, and what registering its Energy anyway costs.

TL;DR: A dual-type Pokémon is both types at once: it can hit either type's Weakness and use either type's support. Its attack cost doesn't change. Mega Mewtwo X ex's Dual Impact costs two Psychic and one Colorless, and Mega Greninja ex's Splash of Darkness costs two Water. Register only that one type. In our 100,000-game test, adding the second type to the Energy Zone drops Mewtwo X's on-curve attack from 100% to about 50%.

The part that trips people up: two types, one Energy cost

Look at the top right corner of Mega Mewtwo X ex. There are two type icons, Psychic and Fighting. Now look at the attack. Dual Impact costs Psychic, Psychic and one Colorless for 100 damage, plus 40 more if a Stadium is in play. Not a single Fighting icon. Mega Greninja ex is the same story: Water and Darkness up top, two Water icons on Splash of Darkness.

Think of it like a Fusion Dance in Dragon Ball. You get one fighter with both fighters' tricks, and you only have to feed one of them. The second type does two things for you:

  • It hits a second Weakness. Pokémon Zone's Dual Fusion release article says dual-type Pokémon are "capable of hitting for two different weaknesses". On r/PTCGP, u/ctsaust1n put it the simple way: "They have two chances to hit weakness or be buffed by cards for specific types".
  • It opens a second pool of support. The same article says they benefit "from the type support of two types at once". Mewtwo X can use Fighting support without a single Fighting Energy.

What it doesn't do is give the card two Weaknesses. Each one still prints exactly one: Darkness for Mega Mewtwo X ex, Lightning for Mega Greninja ex, +20 each. If you're new to Weakness and the Energy Zone, our beginner rules guide covers both.

What the second Energy type costs you

The Energy Zone gives you one Energy a turn, and the player going first gets none on turn one. When you register more than one type, Pokémon Zone's rules guide says "the Energy distribution alternates randomly between the types your deck needs". So registering Fighting next to Psychic turns every Energy into a coin flip.

We ran it 100,000 times per row. The model assumes the attacker (or for Greninja, the Froakie line) is in play from your first turn and takes every Energy it can use, and that the Zone picks each registered type evenly. Greninja is a Stage 2, so turn 3 is the earliest it can attack. Rainbow Cave rows assume the Stadium is in play from turn 1 and that you reroll every Energy that isn't the type the attack still needs, which is the best case.

B4-155B4-155 card artB4-155 Rainbow Cave from Ruler of the Skies is the patch if you must run two types. Once during each player's turn, it lets that player discard the generated Energy and take the next one. It's also a Stadium, so it switches on Dual Impact's extra 40 damage. Our Mega Rayquaza ex guide has more on when to use it.

How to set up a dual-type deck

  1. Read the attack cost, not the type icons. Register the Energy type the attack actually prints. For Mega Mewtwo X ex that's Psychic. For Mega Greninja ex it's Water.
  2. Add the second type only for a partner's attack. If your second attacker needs Fighting or Darkness, the table above is the price.
  3. Pay for Rainbow Cave if you do. It lifts Mewtwo X's on-curve attack from about 50% to about 84%, and it powers Dual Impact.
  4. Sort your support by what it checks. A card that boosts Fighting Pokémon works on Mewtwo X. A card that moves or attaches Fighting Energy needs Fighting Energy, which a Psychic-only Zone won't make.

Edge cases

Froakie and Frogadier are Water only. On r/PTCGP, u/Tyraniboah89 wrote, "Froakie and Frogadier are water types. They don't gain dark until evolving into Greninja." Darkness support does nothing for them before the evolution.

Energy support isn't Pokémon support. This is the trap in step 4. On the same thread, u/Nexxus3000 pointed out that Irida "is not specific to water-type pokemon but instead water-type energy, which can be given to any pokemon".

The two Megas hit each other. Mega Mewtwo X ex is weak to Darkness, and Mega Greninja ex is a Darkness type, so Splash of Darkness gets the +20 against it. Greninja's 100 becomes 120. Splash of Darkness also stops the Defending Pokémon from retreating during your opponent's next turn.

A Mega is worth 3 points. Both cards carry the Mega Evolution ex rule: when one is Knocked Out, your opponent gets 3 points. One KO wins the game, so don't promote a damaged Mega you can't protect.

Rainbow Cave helps your opponent too. The text says "each player's turn", so the other side gets the same reroll.

Limited Battles may not let you use it. The Pokémon Company's Dual Fusion events page says Dual Fusion Limited Battles only allow cards from Dual Fusion and Promo Card Pack C Series Vol. 1, "with some exceptions" it hasn't listed yet. Rainbow Cave is from Ruler of the Skies, so check the in-game news when the event begins on November 17. If it isn't allowed, a one-type Energy Zone matters even more there.

Try it on a rental deck first

You don't have to open packs to test this. Six Dual Fusion rental decks are available from launch until December 15, 2026, at 5:59 p.m. PST, "particularly the dual-type decks featuring Mega Mewtwo X ex and Mega Greninja ex", per the official announcement. The October producer letter says rental decks are now unlimited and usable in versus battles. The dates worth knowing, from the same announcement:

EventDates (2026)
Dual Fusion Emblem Event and Battle Rally MissionsNovember 5 – November 15
Promo Pack C Series Vol. 1, with Dual Fusion Limited BattlesNovember 17 – December 1
Ranked Match Season C1November 30 – December 14

Every other event to January, with deadlines and rewards, is in our Pokemon TCG Pocket 2nd anniversary calendar.

Our take

Build both Megas on one Energy type. The second type comes free: an extra Weakness to hit and a second shelf of support, and you never pay for it in Energy. The Energy Zone is the easy place to go wrong with this set, registering both types because both icons are on the card. If a partner needs the second type, run Rainbow Cave, and accept that Mewtwo X will still miss its on-curve attack about one time in six. For where these decks land once results come in, watch our Pocket meta tier list, and the Pokemon TCG Pocket guide has the rest of the game's basics.

How we checked this: launch time, card text, rental decks, event dates and the Limited Battle card pool from The Pokémon Company's Dual Fusion announcement, events page and October 2026 producer letter on pokemon.com; attack costs, Weakness and the Mega rule read from the official card images in that announcement; the dual-type Weakness and support rule from Pokémon Zone's Dual Fusion release article, with the Energy Zone rules from its how-to-play guide; Rainbow Cave's text from Limitless TCG; the odds table from 100,000 simulated games per row and side, one run with a fixed seed (scripts/sims/ptcgp-dual-type-energy.py, seed 20261023; Rainbow Cave rows rerun on October 29 after an independent check found the first version never rerolled a Fighting Energy); community points from r/PTCGP. We haven't played Dual Fusion; it wasn't out when we ran this.
