Riftbound Pre-Rift Guide: Radiance Kit, Rules and Dates

Go if you want Radiance a week early. Make a Riot ID first: sign-ups left carde.io.

11 min readBy Mika Santos

Our callWorth it if you want to play Radiance early: register on PlayRiftbound.com for an October 16-22 store event, and ask the store its deck minimum.

A Riftbound Pre-Rift is how you play Radiance before its October 23 release: store events run October 16 to 22, and you build from a kit opened at the table. Sign-ups moved to PlayRiftbound.com for this set, so a Riot ID is the one thing to sort out before you look for a store.

TL;DR: Riftbound Pre-Rift events for Radiance run October 16 to 22 at local game stores. You build a deck from a kit with five Radiance boosters and a seeded pack built around one of the nine new Legends, then play a paired tournament. Limited rules let you use any basic Runes and "blank" battlefields, and sign-ups now happen on PlayRiftbound.com with a Riot ID instead of carde.io. Attendees get a Heimerdinger, Academy Instructor promo while supplies last.

Riftbound Pre-Rift: Quick Answer

A Riftbound Pre-Rift is a store-run prerelease where everyone opens the same kind of kit and plays with only what is inside it. For Radiance, that means five boosters plus a seeded Legend pack, played between October 16 and 22, 2026. You register on PlayRiftbound.com, show up, build, and play a few rounds.

Key Takeaways

  • Radiance Pre-Rifts run October 16 to 22, 2026; the set releases October 23 in English, French and Chinese.
  • Each Pre-Rift Kit holds five Radiance boosters and a seeded Pre-Rift pack; Riot makes one for each of the nine new Legends.
  • Attendees get Heimerdinger, Academy Instructor as a promo while supplies last.
  • Limited rules allow any of the 6 basic Runes from any source and "blank" battlefields, and a card banned in Constructed stays legal in Limited.
  • Registration moved from carde.io to PlayRiftbound.com with Riot ID sign-in, starting with this Pre-Rift.

Overview: How a Riftbound Pre-Rift Works

A Riftbound Pre-Rift is a sealed-style event that gives a store's community a first look at a set one week before its full release. Everyone gets a kit, builds a deck from its contents, and plays a paired tournament with that deck. It is the opening event of each set season.

The Organized Play Quick Reference Guide from UVS Games lays out the structure. Each Pre-Rift Event Kit a store orders supports a 16-player prerelease event, and it contains 16 Individual Pre-Rift Player Kits plus one Booster Display for prize support. Stores have to register their Pre-Rift Event in the Riftbound OP software by the deadline, and kits only come through distributors.

From the player side, the guide describes three steps: build a deck from the mini-preconstructed deck, five boosters and promo card, play a paired tournament with it, and preview the new set ahead of launch. It calls the format "accessible" and "beginner-friendly", which matches how low the stakes are compared with a Summoner Skirmish.

What's in the Radiance Riftbound Pre-Rift Kit

Each Radiance Pre-Rift Kit contains five Radiance boosters and a seeded Pre-Rift pack, with one made for each of the set's nine new Legends, according to Riot's overview. The seeded pack is the mini-preconstructed deck that the Organized Play guide describes as 15 cards including a Champion Legend and Champion Unit. You also get one Pre-Rift promo card.

That seeded pack is what gives your deck a direction before you open anything. The five boosters then fill out the rest of your pool. Riot lists each Radiance booster as:

  • 7 Commons and 3 Uncommons
  • 1 Foil slot (Common, Uncommon, Rare or Epic)
  • 1 Rare or Epic
  • 1 slot that can be a Rare, Epic, Alt Art, Special Alt, Overnumber or Ultimate Rare
  • 1 Token, Rune or Alt Art Rune, plus 1 informational insert

Do not open a kit expecting the chase card. Riot says an Ultimate Rare appears in approximately 0.025% of booster packs across the print run, with no guaranteed Ultimate Rare in any pack, box or case.

The promo for this set is Heimerdinger, Academy Instructor. Riot's wording is that you sign up for your LGS's Pre-Rift event and get a copy "while supplies last", so the promo is not promised to every late registrant.

Riftbound Pre-Rift Rules: Building a Limited Deck

A Pre-Rift is a Limited event, so the Limited section of the Riftbound Tournament Rules governs it. The short version: you may only use cards from the product you were given, but you can add any basic Runes and play "blank" battlefields. Deck-size and Domain rules follow the Sealed format below, so confirm the exact numbers with your store.

The Tournament Rules define a limited competition as one "where all product needed for play is provided". A card may only go in your limited deck if it was provided to you as part of the event. Two exceptions make building much easier:

  • Runes: players may use any number of the 6 basic Runes from any source, even ones not in their pool.
  • Battlefields: you can play battlefields from your pool or any number of "blank" battlefields, which work as battlefields with no rules text.

One more Limited rule matters for Radiance in particular: a card banned in Constructed is still legal in a limited deck unless it is also banned in that limited format.

The rules do not print a Pre-Rift-specific format. The closest written one is Sealed, where players open 6 booster packs and build from them. Sealed sets these deckbuilding rules:

  • Main Decks must be at least 25 cards, compared with at least 40 in Constructed.
  • The domain identity is any three domains, or any one domain plus the domains of your Champion Legend.
  • A deck with no Champion Legend or Chosen Champion is still legal; it draws a card at the start of its first Beginning Phase.
  • The normal limits on copies of a named card do not apply, and the "Unique" keyword does not apply.
  • Everything you do not put in your deck is your sideboard, and you can change domain identity, Rune Deck, Legend and Chosen Champion while sideboarding.

Your kit has five boosters and a seeded deck rather than six packs, so treat the Sealed numbers as the written baseline and ask the store before the build starts. The rules treat Pre-Rift and release events as low OPL (Organized Play Level) events where players see the cards for the first time, and recommend up to 45 minutes of deck construction for them. At low OPL, registering a starting configuration is not required, and a head judge can allow electronic devices during deckbuilding.

How to Find and Register for a Pre-Rift

Radiance is the first set where Pre-Rift sign-ups run through PlayRiftbound.com instead of carde.io. You sign in with your Riot ID, search for an event near you and register; no account linking is needed. If you do not have a Riot account, Riot says to create one before registration opens.

The same site handles the event itself. Once you are playing, Riot says you use your phone to check pairings and record your results. When an r/Riftbound player asked why Pre-Rifts were missing from the UVS Games locator, one reply summed it up: "Events have moved to playriftbound starting with Radiance." (u/BIGb0t on r/Riftbound)

Riot's own Dev Drop video walks through the set's new Legends and mechanics, which is useful context before you open your kit:

Step-by-Step: Your Riftbound Pre-Rift Day

1. Register on PlayRiftbound.com. Sign in with your Riot ID, find a store's Pre-Rift between October 16 and 22, and register there. Registering early also helps with the Heimerdinger promo, which is limited to supplies on hand.

2. Open the seeded Legend pack first. It holds your mini-preconstructed deck with a Champion Legend and Champion Unit. Its domains are the starting point for your deck's identity.

3. Open your five boosters and sort by domain. Lay the cards out by domain so you can see which colors back up your seeded Legend. Sealed rules allow any one domain plus your Legend's domains, or any three domains.

4. Build the Main Deck and Rune Deck. Keep the Main Deck near the minimum your store uses, so your best cards show up more often. Add basic Runes that match your domain identity; they can come from any source.

5. Pick battlefields. Use battlefields from your pool or "blank" ones. In best-of-1 events where registration applies, you register three battlefields to pick from at random at the start of each game.

6. Play your rounds and record results. Check pairings and report results on your phone through PlayRiftbound.com. Between games, the rest of your pool is your sideboard.

Tips for Your First Riftbound Pre-Rift

Use the new keywords you see in your pool. Radiance adds three keywords, Deploy, Show Off and Disarm, along with Equipment Units and Bomb tokens. Show Off works by revealing a qualifying card from your hand while you play a card, so count your qualifying cards before relying on it.

Neeko fits any build. Riot calls Neeko the first neutral domain Champion Unit in Riftbound, playable in any deck regardless of its domains. If you open her, she does not constrain your domain choice.

Treat the kit as an event entry, not a cheap way to build a Constructed deck. An r/Riftbound reply about an older Unleashed Pre-Rift kit put it bluntly: "When the pre rift event happens for Radiance, the next set, definitely go buy an entry for that event. Otherwise, for actual play, focus on singles." (u/hyperdeeeee on r/Riftbound)

Do not plan around Overnumbers or the Ultimate Rare. Riot says the nine new Legends appear as Overnumbered variants, but the Ultimate Rare is "our rarest Ultimate Rare yet". Build with what you open.

After the Pre-Rift: Release Day and What Comes Next

Radiance releases on October 23, 2026 in English, French and Chinese. Riot's press release calls it the first set to launch in all three languages at once, and the final 2026 set for the game.

Two more products land around launch. The Showdown Decks pit Seraphine against Evelynn, and Riot says to check back on October 16 for the full decklists. The Vault returns with a storage box, six Radiance booster packs, foil tokens and a set of 36 Runes.

After the release, the season moves to Summoner Skirmish events, which Riot lists as starting November 9 and December 14, 2026. Riot also says it will update the Radiance overview on October 16 at 10:00am PT, the same day Pre-Rifts begin.

Our take

A Radiance Pre-Rift is worth going to if you want to play the set a week early, and it is the cheapest structured way to learn the new keywords. The biggest practical change this time is not a card: registration moved to PlayRiftbound.com with Riot ID sign-in, so set up a Riot account before you look for a store.

The rules point the same way. Limited lets you add any basic Runes and blank battlefields, and Sealed drops the copy limits, so a weak pool is still playable. The one thing we could not pin down is a Pre-Rift-specific deck minimum: the written Sealed rule is 25 cards, built around six packs rather than a kit, so ask your store before you build.

Frequently Asked Questions

When are the Riftbound Pre-Rift events for Radiance? Riot's Radiance overview lists Pre-Rifts from October 16 to 22, 2026, with the full release on October 23, 2026. Pre-Rifts run at local game stores, so the exact day and start time depend on which store you sign up with on PlayRiftbound.com.

What is in the Radiance Pre-Rift Kit? Riot says each Radiance Pre-Rift Kit holds five Radiance boosters and a seeded Pre-Rift pack, made for each of the set's nine new Legends. The Organized Play guide describes the player kit as a 15-card mini preconstructed deck, five boosters and one promo card.

How many cards does a Riftbound Pre-Rift deck need? The Tournament Rules do not print a separate Pre-Rift minimum. The written Sealed format asks for a Main Deck of at least 25 cards, against 40 in Constructed. Ask your store which size it uses, since the Tournament Rules class Pre-Rifts as low OPL events.

How do I register for a Riftbound Pre-Rift? Starting with Radiance Pre-Rift registration, Riot moved event sign-ups from carde.io to PlayRiftbound.com. You sign in with a Riot ID, search for a store near you and register there; pairings and results are also handled on the site during the event.

What promo do you get at the Radiance Pre-Rift? Riot's overview says players who sign up for their store's Pre-Rift get a copy of Heimerdinger, Academy Instructor while supplies last. Supply is per store, so registering early is the safer move if you want the promo.
