Reviewing
Union Arena / One Piece TCG
I play both games. The question I get asked most often is which one is worth starting first, and my honest answer is that it depends on what you are actually looking for. They are good at different things.
This comparison covers the areas that actually matter for the decision: learning curve, cost, IP appeal, competitive depth, and community size. Both games deserve more credit than they typically get in comparisons that assume one must be better than the other.
TL;DR: Union Arena wins on learning curve and IP diversity. One Piece TCG wins on competitive depth and community size. For beginners: Union Arena is easier. For long-term competitive investment: OPTCG. Cost is comparable. Both are genuinely good; the right choice depends on which IP keeps you playing through the learning phase.
Union Arena and One Piece TCG solve different problems. UA wants broad IP coverage and accessible rules. OPTCG wants deep single-IP development and competitive structure. Which problem matters more to you determines which game is worth starting.
Union Arena: Energy auto-generates at 1 per turn. No resource decisions beyond card play sequencing. Turn structure is 5 phases: draw, energy gain, main phase, battle phase, end phase. Combat is power comparison with event modifiers. IP-specific mechanics add some complexity (Domain Expansion, Shadow Army, Hollow Form) but the base game is the same across all IPs.
Most players understand Union Arena well enough to play competently after 2-3 games. The IP-specific mechanics take 5-7 games to fully internalize.
One Piece TCG: DON!! system requires active resource management. You play 2 DON!! per turn and decide whether to pay card costs, attach for power boosts, or hold for future turns. Attaching DON!! permanently commits that resource. Counter phase timing is a distinct skill with significant impact. Trigger cards create reactive decisions mid-attack.
Most players take 10-15 games to feel comfortable with all the systems simultaneously. The ceiling for optimization in OPTCG is higher because there are more decisions per turn.
Verdict: Union Arena is easier to start. OPTCG has more depth to explore long-term.
Starter deck: Both games price starter decks at $15-18 MSRP. This entry point is identical.
Competitive deck (locals-viable):
Competitive deck (regionals):
Collector high end:
Verdict: Union Arena is slightly cheaper for competitive play. OPTCG has a higher collector ceiling but also higher potential collector spend.
Union Arena: One set per IP, multiple IPs in active standard: Solo Leveling, Bleach, JJK, Dragon Ball Super, Naruto, SAO, and InuYasha launching August 2026. Cross-IP play is not permitted in standard but the IP variety means you can switch games without switching systems.
If you love multiple anime franchises, Union Arena lets you buy into each one without learning a new game. This is the single biggest structural advantage UA has over any other anime TCG.
One Piece TCG: Everything is One Piece. Every set, every leader, every character. If you love One Piece, this depth is a feature: the card game rewards knowledge of the source material in a way that multi-IP games cannot. If you want Bleach content in your TCG, look elsewhere.
Verdict: Union Arena wins decisively on IP diversity. OPTCG wins on depth within a single IP.
One Piece TCG: The Championship Series runs regionals across North America, Europe, and Asia with 200-400+ players per regional. The World Championship has a confirmed attendance structure and prize support that positions it as a legitimate competitive destination. Limitless TCG tracks detailed event data, making meta analysis possible in real time.
The competitive meta in OPTCG shifts meaningfully with each set release. Strategy evolves as players find new interactions and sideboard adjustments. The depth of decision-making per game is higher.
Union Arena: Competitive events are growing but smaller: 50-150 players at EN regionals. The competitive infrastructure is less developed than OPTCG, which means fewer data tools and less public coverage. This will improve as the game continues to grow.
The competitive depth per IP is high (JJK especially) but the smaller scene means fewer players pushing optimal lines. Top builds in UA are often solved more slowly than equivalent OPTCG meta analysis.
Verdict: OPTCG wins on competitive scene size and infrastructure. UA is competitive but the scene is smaller.

Both games have active Discord communities, subreddits, and local game store presence. The communities trend positive compared to more established TCG spaces.
One Piece TCG has the larger online community due to One Piece's global IP footprint. The subreddit /r/OnePieceTCG is significantly more active than /r/UnionArena.
Union Arena benefits from IP-specific communities: JJK fans, Bleach fans, and Solo Leveling fans all contribute players who entered through IP loyalty rather than TCG experience. This creates a more casual-friendly social environment at locals.
