Union Arena
I opened my first Solo Leveling booster box expecting to be disappointed. The IP was famous; the card design looked cool; but I had been burned by expensive boxes with weak competitive pull rates before. Instead I pulled a Monarch Sung Jinwoo in pack 4 and a full competitive deck's worth of cards by the end.
Solo Leveling is the aggressive standout of Union Arena's English release lineup. The Shadow Army mechanic creates a resource engine that other IPs struggle to match. The starter deck is legitimately good. The box value holds better than most.
Here's everything worth knowing about the Union Arena Solo Leveling set in 2026.
TL;DR: Solo Leveling Union Arena features Sung Jinwoo + Shadow Army archetype. Shadows go to Shadow Storage on K.O.; Jinwoo summons them back for free. The Solo Leveling set centers on Sung Jinwoo and his Shadow Army. Shadows enter Shadow Storage when K.O.'d instead of the discard pile. Jinwoo's Key Card ability lets you summon Shadows back from Shadow Storage for free, generating card advantage that other Union Arena IPs cannot replicate as efficiently.
In standard Union Arena, when a character is K.O.'d, it goes to the discard pile. You cannot retrieve it without specific event cards. Your creatures are a finite resource.
Solo Leveling changes this rule for Shadow characters. When a Shadow is K.O.'d in combat, you place it in the Shadow Storage zone instead of discarding it. Shadow Storage is a separate, public zone between both players. Both players can see how many Shadows are stored.
Sung Jinwoo's Key Card ability lets you, once per turn, summon one Shadow from Shadow Storage to the field for free. Zero energy cost. The Shadow enters at its base power, ready to attack or block.
This creates a loop: deploy Shadows early, let them trade in combat, summon them back, repeat. A properly built Shadow Army deck can cycle the same 4-5 core Shadows through the game multiple times.
The answer to "why is Solo Leveling so good" is this loop. Your opponent destroys your creatures; they come back. Your opponent spends energy to destroy them again; they come back again. Eventually your opponent's energy curve cannot keep up with the recycled Shadows.
Monarch Sung Jinwoo ($35-55): The chase card and the finisher. At 8 energy, he is late-game only, but his attack power exceeds anything in the format at base. More importantly, his enter ability puts 3 Shadows from your deck or discard directly into Shadow Storage. This refills your storage even if your opponent has been specifically targeting Shadows.
Play at 2 copies in competitive builds. A third copy clogs your early-game hand.
Beru ($12-18): Beru is the Shadow Army's mid-game engine. He grants +1000 power to all other Shadows you control and draws a card when he enters. At 4 energy, he hits the most contested power slot in Union Arena's curve.
Run 4 copies. No negotiation.
Shadow Soldier Igris ($6-10): Igris is the blocker the deck needs. 2 energy, 3000 power, Blocker ability. He holds early attacks and goes to Shadow Storage on K.O. for Jinwoo to recycle. The starter deck includes 2 copies; optimized builds run 4.
Shadow Soldier Iron ($2-4): 2-cost 2000 power with Shadow trait. The cheapest viable Shadow in the set. Used for turn 1-2 board presence and fodder for Jinwoo's recycling loop. Run 4 copies.
System Alert (event, $1-3): The set's best event. Deals 2000 damage to a target character. At 1 energy, it removes most early-game threats. Run 4 copies in every Solo Leveling build.
Shadow Exchange (event, $1-2): Returns a Shadow from discard to Shadow Storage. Redundancy for Jinwoo's main ability. Run 2-3 copies.

The starter deck costs $16.99 MSRP. The full competitive build costs roughly $80-110 after upgrades. Here's what you actually need to buy:
Keep from starter: 4x System Alert, 2x Shadow Soldier Igris, 4x Shadow Soldier Iron, 2x Beru
Add to starter: 2x more Igris ($12-20), 2x more Beru ($24-36), 2x Monarch Sung Jinwoo ($70-110 total)
The largest expense is Monarch Sung Jinwoo. Many competitive players run 1 copy instead of 2 to reduce the investment. The deck functions at 1 copy; the second is a consistency upgrade.
vs. Bleach: Favorable (55-45). Bleach's pace matches Solo Leveling's aggro curve, but Shadows regenerating disrupts Bleach's planned board control. Win through repeated Shadow pressure before Bleach assembles their Hollow form packages.
vs. JJK: Slightly unfavorable (45-55). JJK's domain expansion mechanic can wipe the board, including Shadows already on field. The wipe puts all those Shadows into Shadow Storage, so Jinwoo recycles them next turn. But the tempo loss from the wipe often gives JJK enough damage to close.
vs. Dragon Ball Super: Favorable (60-40). DBZ's power scaling race cannot compete with Shadows refilling continuously. Shadow Army wins on attrition.
Box contents at 24 packs, based on tracked openings:
Box EV: Street price $65-75 per box. Average pulled value from tracked openings: $50-70. Slightly negative EV on average, typical for TCG products. Buying singles for competitive pieces is more efficient than box opening.
Best pull: Monarch Sung Jinwoo ($35-55). If you open one, your box paid for itself.
Worst pull scenario: Opening Beru SP (higher print rate than Monarch) at $8-12 value. Not bad, just not exciting.
Do not over-commit Shadows in the early game if your Shadow Storage is empty. Jinwoo's recycling requires Shadows already in Storage. If you deploy all your Shadows before they can trade, you have no Storage to recycle from on turns 3-4.
Use Arise strategically. Sending an opponent's character to your Shadow Storage means Jinwoo can summon it to your side of the field. Against Bleach, this is devastating because you get a copy of their high-power character working for you.
Shadow Exchange is not just for recovering fallen Shadows. Use it to cycle early-game fodder out of Shadow Storage when you need Beru or Monarch ready for recycling instead.
Count your opponent's removal before committing your second copy of Igris. If their System Alert or equivalent is still in hand, they will kill Igris again immediately. Wait until they waste removal on Iron first.
Can Shadows be removed permanently in Solo Leveling? Yes. Some Union Arena events permanently remove characters from the game rather than K.O.'ing them. These bypass Shadow Storage entirely. Check card text for "remove from game" versus "K.O."
Is the Solo Leveling set still in standard format? Yes as of 2026. Check the official Union Arena rotation schedule for updates, as Bandai Namco rotates sets seasonally.
How does Arise interact with opponent Shadows? Arise puts a targeted opponent character into your Shadow Storage. Jinwoo can then summon it to your field using his Key Card ability. The character fights for you as a Shadow with its base stats.
What is the best event card to protect Jinwoo's Key Card? Level Up (2-cost, +2000 counter) is the most efficient protective event in the set. Use it when your opponent attacks Jinwoo directly and you cannot block.
Where can I find Solo Leveling Union Arena singles? TCGPlayer, CardMarket, and dedicated anime TCG stores carry Solo Leveling singles. Face-to-face trading at locals is often the cheapest option for common and uncommon pieces.
