Union Arena
TL;DR: The Union Arena Impact keyword is widely considered the strongest ability in the game. When a character with Impact wins a battle, it also deals damage to the opposing player (they take Life). A printed Impact❶ takes 1 extra Life; a separate support-card ability written as "Impact +1" raises an existing Impact value by 1 instead. It converts board wins directly into the win condition, even through blocks, which is why nearly every top deck runs an Impact attacker. The main counter is Nullify Impact; otherwise, block, remove, or deny it favorable battles.
Note: Union Arena is won by taking all 7 Life cards. Impact is the keyword that turns combat into Life damage, so it sits at the center of the game.
Impact does one devastating thing:
That is it, and it is enough to make Impact the most important offensive keyword in Union Arena. The game is won by taking all 7 of the opponent's Life, and Impact is how you convert winning fights into actually doing that.

Normally, when your front-line character attacks and the defender blocks, the two characters battle. If your attacker wins (higher BP), it removes the blocker, but the opponent's Life is safe, they spent a blocker to protect it. That is the basic defensive exchange.
Impact changes that math. A character with Impact that wins a battle deals damage to the opposing player anyway. So even when the defender blocks and you beat the blocker, the opponent still takes Life. You get both the removal and the hit.
The value tells you how much, and it's worth being precise about the notation because two different keyword texts get confused here:
This is why Impact is so feared: it punishes blocking. Against a plain attacker, blocking fully protects your Life. Against Impact, blocking can still cost you.
Union Arena has many keywords, but Impact is consistently ranked at the top, and the reason is simple: it is the only keyword that directly attacks the win condition through combat. The Union Arena Raid mechanic pairs naturally with Impact, since Raid transformations often unlock higher Impact values.
Practically, this means a deck with a strong Impact attacker applies pressure that the opponent cannot fully block away. They either remove the Impact character, find Nullify Impact, or keep bleeding Life. Nearly every top-tier competitive deck runs at least one offensive character with Impact for this exact reason. If your deck cannot threaten Life through blocks, it struggles to close games no matter how good its board looks.
Impact punishes blocking: when an Impact character wins a battle, the opponent takes Life even though they blocked, so it converts board wins into the win condition.
Impact gets even stronger when paired with the right keywords. The standout combination:
More broadly, anything that helps your Impact character win battles indirectly powers up Impact: BP boosts, effects that weaken blockers, or abilities that force favorable combats. When you evaluate an Impact character, look at how reliably it wins fights, because Impact only pays off on a win.
Because Impact is everywhere, knowing the counterplay in order matters.
1. Check for Nullify Impact first. It's the direct answer, stopping an opponent's Impact from taking Life outright. The catch is that a card with Nullify Impact is best when it also earns its slot for other reasons, since the ability alone is situational.
2. Block or trade before the battle resolves. Impact only triggers on a battle win. If you can block with a character that wins or ties the battle, or remove the Impact attacker first, you deny the Life loss entirely.
3. Avoid feeding it favorable battles in the first place. Don't attack into a position where your character loses to an Impact blocker, and don't leave weak blockers that an Impact attacker beats for free.
4. Race or remove if the first three options aren't available. Remove the Impact character with an effect, or pressure your own Life lead hard enough that the opponent can't afford to trade into it.
The key insight: Impact is conditional on winning a battle. Take away the favorable battles and you take away the Impact.
Counter Impact by denying it a battle win: Nullify Impact, blocking with a character that wins or ties, or removing the Impact attacker before it connects.
For deckbuilding, treat Impact as your win condition layer:
A clean way to think about it: your board and energy are setup, and your Impact attacker is the payoff that turns that setup into a win.
Because Impact only triggers on a battle win, both players are constantly doing the same mental math during combat: will this attacker win the fight? As the attacker, you commit Impact into battles you expect to win, often after a BP boost or against a weaker blocker, so the keyword actually fires and takes Life. As the defender, you avoid blocking an Impact attacker with a character that loses, since that just hands over the removal and the Life. Sometimes the correct defensive play is to take the plain hit and not block at all, denying the Impact its battle entirely (no battle, no Impact trigger). That counterintuitive line, letting an attack through to protect against a worse Impact swing later, is a real skill. The Union Arena JJK guide shows a practical example: Gojo Satoru with high BP is exactly the kind of Impact attacker you never want to feed a favorable battle. Track which of the opponent's characters carry Impact and at what value, and plan your blocks and trades around keeping those specific characters out of winning battles. Once you read combat through the Impact lens, your blocking and attacking decisions get noticeably sharper, because you are protecting the win condition instead of just trading bodies.
GODEEPER: Impact wins battles, but triggers on your Life cards can swing them back. Learn the trigger system. Union Arena Trigger System Explained
Q: What does Impact do? A: When a character with Impact wins a battle, the opponent takes Life. A printed Impact❶ takes 1 extra Life card.
Q: Why is Impact the best keyword? A: It converts battle wins into Life damage, the win condition, even through blocks. Nearly every top deck runs an Impact attacker.
Q: What does Impact (+1) mean? A: A printed Impact❶ is the base value: how much extra Life the opponent takes on a battle win. "Impact +1" is a separate support-card ability that raises an existing Impact value by 1.
Q: How do you counter Impact? A: Nullify Impact, or deny it a favorable battle: block with a winner, remove the attacker, or avoid feeding it good combats.
Q: Does Impact work when blocked? A: Yes. It triggers on a battle win, including beating a blocker, so blocking does not always stop the Life loss.
Q: Should beginners build around Impact? A: Yes, run at least one strong Impact attacker as a win condition. Decks with no Impact struggle to close games.
