Union Arena Rurouni Kenshin Deck Guide: Red Build 2026

Two starter decks get you most of the way there, and the record says the deck still holds up.

7 min readBy Mika SantosUpdated 10 days ago

Our callBuild Red Kenshin from two $11.99 starter decks. It shares the most official top-four finishes in Bandai's archive with Evangelion, but it missed both Wave 2 top cuts, so don't call it the best deck.

The Union Arena Rurouni Kenshin deck to build is Red, and you can start it with two copies of the starter deck. Bandai's own results archive has the title in 12 top-four finishes, level with Evangelion for the most, including a Red win at the 25-26 North America Finals. The catch: it hasn't made a top four in the two newest regionals, where Solo Leveling won both.

How we checked this: we counted every Rurouni Kenshin entry on Bandai's top-placing decks page on October 19, 2026, read the card text on the official card list, and compared it with a published upgrade guide and r/Union_Arena_TCG threads.

Updated October 19, 2026: We corrected the tournament record (a Purple 2nd place, not a win, on the June 26 results, and the dates are Bandai's posting dates), added the Wave 2 results and the North America Finals win, and separated the starter-deck Kenshin from the booster SR.

Union Arena Rurouni Kenshin deck results so far

Bandai's top-placing decks archive lists the top four of 14 North American events. Rurouni Kenshin shows up 12 times: 8 Red, 4 Purple. Dates below are when Bandai posted each result.

Read the trend, not just the total. All three wins came in the 25-26 season. In 26-27 the deck keeps reaching finals and losing them, and in Wave 2 it dropped out of the top four entirely while Solo Leveling took 4 of the 8 spots. Our current Union Arena meta puts that shift in context.

The two Kenshin Himura SRs, and which one the starter gives you

This is the part our earlier version of this guide got wrong. There are two SR Kenshin Himura cards, and the starter deck has the one Joseph Writer Anderson calls "the strongest card in the set."

UE11ST/RNK-1-106 (starter deck SR). 4 Red energy, 1 AP, 4000 BP, Raid onto Kenshin Himura. During your turn, opposing characters that lose a battle to it move to their energy line instead of being sidelined. It has Impact 1, and when played it chooses up to one character on the opponent's front line and moves it to their energy line.

UE11BT/RNK-1-090 (booster SR). Same cost and BP, same energy-line clause, same Raid. Instead of Impact it has a once-per-turn When Attacking ability: place a card from your hand into your sideline to switch it back to active. When played, it draws a card. It also comes in SR★★ and SR★★★ parallel prints.

Both print the same Raid trigger: add the card to your hand, or Raid with it if you have the energy. Neither removes anything. The energy-line clause reroutes a beaten character to a zone where it only makes energy, so do your attack math as if the card is still there. If you're fuzzy on how Raid works, our Raid mechanic explainer covers it.

Building Red Kenshin from two starters

Anderson's Red starter deck upgrade guide starts from two Kenshin starter decks ($11.99 MSRP each, released September 26, 2025) and says that basic build "is actually strong enough on its own to start playing some games. You could even take this to a tournament if you wanted." His full list took more work: "To get these cards, I needed to purchase about six booster boxes."

What goes in the rest of the deck? There's no single agreed list. When a player asked r/Union_Arena_TCG for the best Red Kenshin decklist, u/t3rm1nsel answered that "most decklists I've seen have been some amount of Kenshins and Kaorus", and that "for certain you want to run all 8 raids, the two zero drop kenshins, the 1 drop kenshin, the color trigger Kenshin, and the 0 drop Kaorus." That matches the starter's cheap end: the 0-energy Kenshin Himura (RNK-1-085) and 0-energy Kaoru Kamiya (RNK-1-068) build the energy line so the 4-energy Raids land on time.

Mabi TCG's deck profile walks through a Kenshin, Kaoru and Sanosuke list and how it plays:

Hajime Saito: the Purple alternative

Purple is the other Rurouni Kenshin build, and it has 4 of the 12 finishes, all 2nd or 3rd places. Hajime Saito (UE11BT/RNK-1-040, SR) needs 6 Purple energy, costs 1 AP and has 4000+ BP, with Raid and Impact 1. When played, if you have no cards with affinities on your field, he gains 1000 BP and can attack from the energy line until the end of the turn; when he does, he moves to the front line and gains Snipe, so he can pick a front-line target and the opponent can't block.

That "no affinities" condition shapes the whole list. A strong card with an affinity can switch Saito's best turn off, so lean builds win out over stacking good cards.

Our take

Buy two starters and play Red. It's cheap, the starter carries the set's best Kenshin, and the record is real. We'd hold off on the six-box upgrade until you know you like the deck, and we'd skip Purple unless you already own the Saito cards: it's the less proven build, and it makes you play around your own affinity cards. Just know the 26-27 results are a warning. Kenshin keeps losing finals and missed Wave 2, so treat it as a strong deck, not the one to beat.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Red Kenshin a good deck in Union Arena? Yes. It shares the most top-four finishes in Bandai's archive (12, with Evangelion), including the 25-26 North America Finals win, but it has no top four in the two Wave 2 regionals.

Which Kenshin Himura card is in the starter deck? The SR UE11ST/RNK-1-106, with Impact 1 and a When Played move to the energy line. The booster SR, UE11BT/RNK-1-090, is a different card.

What does the booster Kenshin Himura SR do? It reroutes characters it beats in battle to the opponent's energy line, can switch back to active once per turn after attacking by sidelining a card from hand, and draws a card when played.

Is there a Purple Rurouni Kenshin build? Yes. Purple has 4 of the 12 finishes. It runs on Hajime Saito, who gains an energy-line attack and Snipe when your field has no affinity cards.

How much does it cost to build Red Kenshin? Two starters at $11.99 MSRP each get you a playable deck; Anderson needed about six booster boxes for his full list.
