Black Teach Deck Guide: OP-17 Decklist and How to Pilot It
A leader that negates its own On Play effects, and a control list whose winners skipped OP-17 entirely.
Our callBuild it once and keep it: three September winners share 45 of 50 cards. Skip it if you hate paying for every effect from your hand.

The Black Teach deck turns a drawback into its plan: the Marshall.D.Teach OP09-081 leader negates your own On Play effects, so the list is built from cards that never needed them. Three Black Teach lists won events in September 2026 and agree on almost the whole deck; we read each card against Bandai's text and marked the few slots that move.

TL;DR: Marshall.D.Teach OP09-081 (Black, 5 Life, 5000 power) trashes 1 card from hand to shut off your opponent's On Play effects until the end of their next turn. Three September 1st-place lists share 45 of 50 cards and play no OP-17 cards at all. OPMetagame had the deck in A tier on October 9 with 8 OP-17 decklists, a snapshot from before the October 12 Mihawk ban.
Black Teach Deck: Quick Answer
A Black Teach deck is a control list. It answers threats with cost reduction and K.O. effects on its own turn, then uses the leader to turn off your opponent's On Play effects on theirs. The consensus build runs 4 Caribou, 4 Doc Q, 4 Van Augur, 4 Stronger, 4 Laffitte, 4 Kuzan OP10-082 and 4 Fullalead.
Key Takeaways
- The leader is Marshall.D.Teach OP09-081, a mono-Black leader; it is not the Black/Yellow Teach leader.
- Puremi's September 30 Store Prelims winner has 36 Characters, 10 Events and 4 Fullalead Stages.
- Three September winners share 45 of their 50 cards; only 5 slots move between them.
- None of the three lists plays an OP-17 card.
- OPMetagame put Black Blackbeard in A tier on October 9, with 8 decklists in the OP-17 tier list.
The OP09-081 Leader, Read Closely
Marshall.D.Teach OP09-081 is a Black Leader with 5 Life and 5000 power, typed The Four Emperors/Blackbeard Pirates, from Emperors in the New World (OP-09). Its first line reads "Your [On Play] effects are negated." Its second is the payoff: on your turn, you may trash 1 card from your hand, and your opponent's On Play effects are negated until the end of their next turn.
Image: Bandai official card list
That timing matters. You use the ability on your own turn, and it covers your opponent's whole next turn. Searchers, removal on play and big On Play finishers all stop working until your following turn begins.
Do not mix this up with the other Teach. Our Black Yellow Teach deck guide covers the two-color leader with a Yellow trigger plan. OPMetagame tracks "Black Blackbeard" and "Black/Yellow Blackbeard" as two separate leaders.
The September Black Teach Decklist
This is the most recent 1st-place list on OPMetagame's Black Blackbeard page: Puremi's deck from a September 30, 2026 Store Prelims. It has 50 cards plus the leader.

That is 50 cards: 36 Characters, 10 Events and 4 Stages. None of these cards has a page in our card database yet, so every row links to Limitless.
The counter split, by Bandai's printed values: 8 Characters carry a 2000 Counter (Caribou and Stronger), 20 carry 1000, and 8 have none (both 4-ofs of Kuzan OP10-082 and the cost-10 Teach). There are no Counter Events, so defense comes from hand cards and Caribou's Blocker.

Why the List Ignores On Play
Read the 15 rows above against Bandai's text and a pattern appears: almost nothing here needs an On Play. The effects are Activate: Main, On K.O., static text or Blocker.
The one exception helps you. Caribou OP11-083 is a 1-cost Blocker with a 2000 Counter whose On Play reads "Trash 2 cards from your hand." Under this leader that line is negated, so Caribou is a cheap Blocker with no cost attached.
Image: Bandai official card list
The removal works by stacking cost reduction:
Van Augur OP09-083 (x4). Rest it to give up to 1 opposing Character −3 cost this turn. On K.O., draw 1 card.
Stronger OP09-089 (x4). Trash 1 card from hand and trash Stronger to draw 1 card, then give up to 1 opposing Character −2 cost this turn.
Doc Q OP09-090 (x4). Rest it to K.O. up to 1 opposing Character with a cost of 1 or less. On K.O., draw 1 card.
Put together, Van Augur's −3 and Stronger's −2 drop a 6-cost Character to 1, and Doc Q K.O.s it. That is three cards for one, which is why the deck needs its search. Laffitte looks at 5 cards, and My Era...Begins!! and Fullalead each look at 3, for 12 search cards.
The trash fuels the rest. Jesus Burgess gains +1000 power for every 4 cards in your trash and cannot be K.O.'d by your opponent's effects. Tempest Kick draws 1 and, with 10 or more cards in your trash, gives −3 cost. Kuzan OP10-082 trashes itself to draw 1 and play a Blackbeard Pirates Character with a cost of 5 or less, other than Kuzan, from your trash.
On r/OnePieceTCG, one player summed up the options: "I think in every matchup, Teach's wincon comes down to one or two of three things: Turbo Burgess, Control, or 10 Drop Chain." (u/JerryDaJoker on r/OnePieceTCG)
Three Winning Lists, 45 Shared Cards
OPMetagame's three newest Black Teach 1st places are all from September: Puremi (Store Prelims, September 30), Matthew (Pirates Party, September 26) and Shirubi (Store Prelims, September 18). Counting the lowest number of copies each card has across the three, they share 45 of 50 cards.
These 28 cards are identical in all three: 4 Caribou, 4 Doc Q, 4 Kuzan OP10-082, 4 Laffitte, 4 Stronger, 4 Van Augur and 4 Fullalead. The other slots move like this:
| Card | Puremi (Sep 30) | Matthew (Sep 26) | Shirubi (Sep 18) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marshall.D.Teach OP09-093 | 4 | 3 | 3 |
| Jesus Burgess | 4 | 3 | 4 |
| Kuzan ST27-003 | 2 | 3 | 2 |
| Shiryu | 2 | 2 | 1 |
| Catarina Devon | 0 | 1 | 1 |
| Marshall.D.Teach ST27-005 | 0 | 1 | 1 |
| My Era...Begins!! | 4 | 3 | 4 |
| Tempest Kick | 4 | 3 | 4 |
| Black Hole | 2 | 3 | 2 |
The newest list cut both one-ofs, Catarina Devon and the 7-cost Teach ST27-005, for a fourth cost-10 Teach and more Shiryu.

Step-by-Step: Piloting Black Teach
1. Dig before you disrupt. Use Laffitte, Fullalead and My Era...Begins!! early. Fullalead and My Era both put cards in your trash, which Burgess and Tempest Kick want later.
2. Pick the turn for the leader. The ability costs a card from hand, and the deck has little draw. Use it on the turn before your opponent's strongest On Play turn, not every turn.
3. Stack cost reduction, then K.O. Rest Van Augur for −3, trash Stronger for −2, then rest Doc Q to K.O. the Character that now costs 1 or less.
4. Count your trash. Burgess grows by 1000 for every 4 cards, and Tempest Kick only gives −3 cost at 10 or more cards.
5. Recycle with Kuzan. Trash Kuzan OP10-082 to draw 1 and replay Van Augur, Doc Q or Burgess from your trash. Kuzan ST27-003 does the same from your trash, rested, when it is K.O.'d.
6. Land the cost-10 Teach. On the turn you play Marshall.D.Teach OP09-093, it can negate your opponent's Leader effect and one Character's effect, and that Character cannot attack until the end of your opponent's next turn. It is also a 12000-power Blocker.
Tips for the Black Teach Deck
Mind the hand size. The leader, Stronger and Fullalead all ask for a card from hand. One r/OnePieceTCG player put the deck's weak point plainly: "Teach's biggest issue is really the fact that he can't replenish his hand at any decent rate, he just doesn't have any real draw power." (u/Million_X on r/OnePieceTCG)
Doc Q, Van Augur and Kuzan replace themselves. Doc Q and Van Augur draw on K.O., and Kuzan OP10-082 draws when you trash it. Trading them off is how the deck keeps its hand.
Shiryu only works the turn you play it. Its K.O. on a base cost 3 or less needs it to have been played that turn. On your opponent's turn it is a 7000-power body with its +2000.
Catarina Devon is the flex pick. Two of the three winners played one. Once per turn she gains Double Attack, Banish or Blocker until the end of your opponent's next turn.
Black Teach in the OP-17 Meta
On October 9, OPMetagame's tier list placed Black Blackbeard in A tier with 8 OP-17 decklists. Its leader page tracks 191 decklists across formats and gives a 45.6% average win rate in the current OP-17 format. The best tracked finish there is 1st place at Championship Finals Paris.
That number comes from before October 12, when Bandai's ban on the Dracule Mihawk leader OP14-020 took effect. Players expect the change to hurt Teach. On r/OnePieceTCG one wrote the deck is "in a worse spot in the meta after the mihawk ban -- but this leader will always be relevant as long as there are decks that are depending on powerful onplay effects." (u/Routine-Analysis-556 on r/OnePieceTCG) For the full list of banned cards, see our One Piece TCG banlist explainer.

Our take
Black Teach is the most settled control list in the format: three different winners agree on nearly every card, and none came from OP-17. You can build it once and keep it through a set change.
The cost is the hand. Every useful effect asks you to rest or trash something, and the deck draws mostly off its own K.O.s. The leader's lock is only as good as your read on which On Play your opponent needs next turn. We would treat the October 9 tier numbers as pre-ban and check OPMetagame again once results after October 12 come in.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best Black Teach decklist for OP-17? The newest 1st-place list on OPMetagame is Puremi's from a September 30, 2026 Store Prelims: 36 Characters, 10 Events and 4 Fullalead Stages. Two other September winners, Matthew and Shirubi, share 45 of its 50 cards, so the core is settled.
Which Teach leader is Black Teach? Black Teach is Marshall.D.Teach OP09-081 from Emperors in the New World, a mono-Black leader with 5 Life and 5000 power. It is a different card from the Black/Yellow Teach leader that plays the Yellow trigger package.
Why does the Black Teach leader negate its own On Play effects? That is the drawback printed on OP09-081. In return, by trashing 1 card from your hand, you negate your opponent's On Play effects until the end of their next turn. Lists are built from Activate: Main, On K.O. and Blocker cards so the drawback costs almost nothing.
Is Black Teach good in OP-17? OPMetagame's tier list had Black Blackbeard in A tier on October 9, 2026, with 8 OP-17 decklists, and its leader page gives a 45.6% average win rate in the OP-17 format. Players on r/OnePieceTCG say it fares worse after the Mihawk ban, so treat that as a pre-ban number.
Does Black Teach use any OP-17 cards? No. None of the three September 1st-place lists in this guide plays an OP-17 card. Every card comes from OP-07, OP-09, OP-10, OP-11 or the ST-27 starter deck, and all of them carry Block 2 or 3 icons.
