OP-17 Kaido Deck Guide: Purple Removal, Not Ramp 2026

13 min readBy Alex ChenUpdated 4 days ago

OP17-058OP17-058 card artOP17-058Shop on TCGplayer Kaido landed in Purple as one of OP-17's six confirmed leaders, and now that his card text is public, the OP-17 Kaido deck turns out to be something different from what the color's history predicted. Purple in this game has often meant DON!! ramp, but Kaido's ability doesn't ramp anything. It's once per turn, when Kaido attacks or when your opponent attacks, DON!! -1 to give an opposing Character -2000 power for that turn. This guide breaks down what that means for deck construction, using two Animal Kingdom Pirates support cards from the set.

Kaido's OP-17 leader card beside the Ulti and Page One Animal Kingdom Pirates support card in a purple composite

TL;DR: Kaido's leader ability, verified: once per turn, DON!! -1, when Kaido attacks or when your opponent attacks, give up to 1 opposing Character -2000 power during that turn. That's cheap, flexible removal support or protection, not the DON!! ramp Purple has often meant. Ulti & Page One (OP17-060) and Lead Performers (OP17-061) add two clear Animal Kingdom Pirates lines. On the October 12 tracker check, Purple Kaido was A tier with 101 decklists and a 50.2% win rate, close to Enel in volume but not ahead of it.

Updated October 12, 2026: Card text re-checked against Bandai's card list and two timing errors fixed. Kaido's -2000 lasts only "during this turn," so it cannot set up Ulti & Page One's K.O. "on an earlier turn," and Characters cannot be played during a battle; the working line is to attack with Kaido first, then play Ulti & Page One later in the same Main Phase. The [When Attacking] half triggers when Kaido himself attacks. Tracker figures now come from the October 12 check, and TCG Contender tournament results we could not re-open were removed.

OP-17 Kaido Deck Overview: Quick Answer

An OP-17 Kaido deck is built around a Leader whose ability is a cheap, repeatable power-reduction trick rather than a ramp engine. Once per turn, for DON!!-1, Kaido gives an opposing Character minus 2000 power, and that trigger fires on either your own attack or your opponent's, so it doubles as offense and defense. The deck's confirmed Animal Kingdom Pirates support, Ulti & Page One (OP17-060) and Lead Performers (OP17-061), both check whether your Leader carries the Animal Kingdom Pirates type, which Kaido does, to unlock extra value.

Key Takeaways

  • Kaido (OP17-058) is a 5000-power, 5-life Purple Leader with the Special attribute, Four Emperors, and Animal Kingdom Pirates types
  • Leader ability, verified: once per turn, DON!! -1, when Kaido attacks OR when your opponent attacks, give 1 opposing Character -2000 power during that turn
  • This is not DON!! ramp. Enel's Leader adds DON!! cards every turn; Kaido spends a small amount of DON!! for a repeatable combat trick instead
  • Ulti & Page One (OP17-060) adds an active DON!! and can K.O. a Character with 3000 power or less on play, if your Leader has the Animal Kingdom Pirates type
  • Lead Performers (OP17-061) adds a card to your Life and can trash itself to play a King OP17-064OP17-064 card artOP17-064Shop on TCGplayer, Queen OP17-065OP17-065 card artOP17-065Shop on TCGplayer, or Jack OP17-069OP17-069 card artOP17-069Shop on TCGplayer from your hand
  • On the October 12 tracker check, Purple Kaido was A tier with 101 decklists, a 50.2% win rate and 5.9% meta share; TCG Contender rates it Tier 2; neither shows Kaido displacing Enel
  • Kaido's fire-on-either-attack design means the ability isn't purely aggressive or purely defensive, it's both

Kaido's Leader Ability, Verified

The full text: "[When Attacking]/[On Your Opponent's Attack] [Once Per Turn] DON!! −1: Give up to 1 of your opponent's Characters −2000 power during this turn." Read the trigger conditions carefully, because they're doing the real work here. On a Leader card, [When Attacking] means when Kaido himself attacks, so you can shrink a likely Blocker or another target before the battle plays out. Or it can fire on your opponent's attack instead, shrinking their attacking Character so it no longer beats your Leader or Blocker. Either way it's once per turn total, so you're picking your single best window each turn rather than stacking it, and the -2000 ends with the turn.

That flexibility answers a question our own pre-launch predictions piece left open. Full card text wasn't public when that article guessed at Kaido's design, and it noted that a defensive ability would weaken the case for Kaido pressuring Enel directly. The real text splits the difference: Kaido isn't a pure aggro tool or a pure control piece, it's a cheap combat trick usable in both directions. Current tracker results show that the deck has competitive use, but they are not enough to say it has cut into Enel's established role.

Cost efficiency matters here too. DON!!-1 for minus 2000 power is a fair rate by this game's normal pricing, and because it's repeatable every turn rather than a one-time Event, Kaido functions as a standing threat an opponent has to play around on every attack step, not just once. That changes how opposing decks sequence their own attacks: trading into Kaido's deck means accounting for a Character potentially losing 2000 power at the worst possible moment.

Building the Animal Kingdom Pirates Package: Confirmed Support

Two cards, both verified against the official OP-17 card list, are useful starting points for the Animal Kingdom Pirates shell around Kaido.

OP17-060OP17-060 card artOP17-060Shop on TCGplayer Ulti & Page One is a Purple 6-cost, 6000-power Rare Character with the Strike attribute and a plus 1000 Counter, carrying the Animal Kingdom Pirates type itself. On Play: if your Leader has the Animal Kingdom Pirates type, which Kaido does, add up to 1 DON!! card as active from your DON!! deck, then K.O. up to 1 of your opponent's Characters with 3000 power or less. The synergy with Kaido is real but needs the right order. Kaido's -2000 lasts only during the turn it is used, and you cannot play a Character in the middle of a battle. So attack with Kaido first, use the [When Attacking] debuff on a 5000-power Character, then play Ulti & Page One later in the same Main Phase while that Character sits at 3000.

OP17-061OP17-061 card artOP17-061Shop on TCGplayer Lead Performers, featuring King and Queen and Jack in its art, is a heavier Purple 9-cost, 11000-power Character with Strike and Special attributes and the Fish-Man and Animal Kingdom Pirates types. On Play, DON!!-1: if your Leader has the Animal Kingdom Pirates type, add up to 1 card from the top of your deck to the top of your Life cards. Its second line is a toolbox effect: Activate, Main, you may trash this Character to play up to 1 King, Queen, or Jack from your hand. King (OP17-064), Queen (OP17-065) and Jack (OP17-069) each cost 9 and have 10000 power, so that swap puts a second 9-cost body into play without paying its cost.

Compared to the DON!! ramp identity Purple has carried through Sengoku and Enel, Kaido's shell reads closer to a removal-and-defense build. Ulti & Page One's KO effect and Kaido's own power-reduction both answer the opponent's board directly instead of racing to deploy something bigger first, which is a genuinely different lane inside the same color.

Step-by-Step: Piloting the OP-17 Kaido Deck

1. Mulligan for early blockers and Purple counter density over a single Animal Kingdom Pirates piece. An opening hand needs to survive first. Prioritize a hand that can block and counter competently over one that keeps a narrow synergy line without the cards needed to support it.

2. Hold Kaido's power-reduction trigger for the turn it changes an outcome, not the first turn it's available. Because it's Once Per Turn, firing it early on a low-stakes attack wastes a resource you'll want later when a real trade or a real block is on the line.

3. Use the trigger defensively whenever your board is behind. On your opponent's attack, minus 2000 power on their attacker can save a Character that would otherwise trade down or die outright. This is the side of the ability a purely aggressive read of Kaido misses.

4. Use it offensively once you're ahead on board. When Kaido attacks, shrinking a likely Blocker or a key Character turns a stalled attack into real damage, which matters more once you have the board presence to press an advantage rather than just survive.

5. Sequence Ulti & Page One after Kaido's attack. A Character above 3000 power is safe from Ulti & Page One's on-play K.O. on its own. Attack with Kaido, give it -2000 with the [When Attacking] trigger, then play Ulti & Page One in the same Main Phase. The debuff ends at the end of the turn, so this only works within one turn.

Tips for Building Around Kaido

Don't build this like a Sengoku or Enel Purple deck. Those decks want DON!! acceleration pieces and a curve that spikes toward expensive payoffs. Kaido wants Characters that hold up in combat and reward you for controlling the board turn to turn, closer to a removal-and-tempo shell than a ramp shell, even though all three share a color.

Counter density matters more here than in a ramp deck, since Kaido's own ability is a combat trick rather than a way to skip turns of development. A hand that can both block competently and threaten Kaido's minus 2000 power trigger puts real pressure on how an opponent sequences their attacks against you.

Track Animal Kingdom Pirates density the same way a Rocks Pirates Xebec deck tracks its own tribal count. Ulti & Page One and Lead Performers both check for the type on your Leader specifically, which Kaido satisfies automatically, so neither card is a dead draw even before more tribal support gets confirmed. That's a real advantage over archetypes that need a minimum density before their payoffs turn on.

An initial test list can start with Kaido, Ulti & Page One, and Lead Performers around generic Purple removal and blockers. The actual cost and competitive value will depend on the rest of the list and current singles prices, so treat that as a starting shell rather than a market verdict.

What We Don't Know Yet: Kaido vs Enel and Real Meta Share

On the October 12 check of the fan-run One Piece TCG Meta tracker, Purple Kaido was A tier with 101 decklists, a 50.2% tracked win rate and a 5.9% meta share. Purple Enel was S tier with 87 decklists, 50.5% and 6.3%. TCG Contender separately rates Kaido Tier 2. Kaido is played about as often as Enel, but the tracker does not show it taking Enel's place, and all of that data comes from before the October 12 Mihawk ban changed the field.

What's changed since our prediction piece was written is both the card text and the results sample. Kaido isn't the purely aggressive leader some early reads guessed at, and it isn't a pure defensive tool either. The results support testing the deck seriously, while the post-ban field still has to settle.

What Kaido players are saying

ItsUpstart's September 24 deck profile covers the pre-ban Kaido list. On r/OnePieceTCG, one player summed up the Leader: "He has a genetically good ability." Another laid out the matchups: "Has advantage over big mom and elbaph slops, 50/50 vs rocks and shanks, but lose hard to l RG luffy ace and probably every other heavy aggro leader". That fits the card text: a -2000 trick helps most in slower board fights.

Our take

Based on the card text and tracker data cited above, Kaido is a solid Purple option with one rule to remember: the -2000 only lasts for the turn, so every combo with it has to happen in that turn. Attack with Kaido, debuff, then play Ulti & Page One. Lead Performers' swap into King, Queen or Jack is the deck's biggest swing. The tracker says Kaido is as popular as Enel but not stronger, so pick it if you prefer board fights to Enel's finisher plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

What color is Kaido in OP-17? Purple. Kaido is card OP17-058, a 5000-power, 5-life Leader with the Special attribute and the Four Emperors and Animal Kingdom Pirates types. He's one of OP-17's six confirmed leaders.

What does Kaido's leader ability actually do? Once per turn, when Kaido attacks or when your opponent attacks, pay DON!! -1 to give up to 1 opposing Character -2000 power during that turn. It's a cheap combat trick that works offensively or defensively, and it ends with the turn.

Is Kaido an aggressive leader or a defensive one? Both, by design. The ability triggers when Kaido attacks to push damage through, or on your opponent's attack to save a Character from being knocked out. It's a flexible combat trick, not a fixed archetype.

What Animal Kingdom Pirates cards support Kaido in OP-17? Two confirmed OP-17 support cards highlighted here are Ulti & Page One (OP17-060), which adds a DON!! and can K.O. a small Character on play, and Lead Performers (OP17-061), which adds a card to your Life cards and can play a King, Queen, or Jack from your hand.

Does the OP-17 Kaido deck play like Sengoku's DON ramp deck? No. Sengoku's Leader returns 8 active DON!! cards to play up to 3 Admirals from hand, a big-turn plan. Kaido's is cheap, repeatable power reduction that can fire on offense or defense.

Does Kaido actually pressure Enel's spot in the Purple metagame? Not on the tracker. On October 12, Purple Kaido was A tier with 101 decklists and a 50.2% win rate, while Purple Enel was S tier with 87 decklists and 50.5%. Kaido is played as often but has not displaced Enel.

Is there real tournament data for the Kaido deck yet? Yes. The One Piece TCG Meta tracker counted 101 Kaido decklists on October 12, 2026, with a 50.2% win rate, and TCG Contender rates the deck Tier 2. That is steady competitive use from the pre-ban window, not a top-tier staple.
